Dominique PortetThe Portet family has an unmatched record in the Australian wine industry. A statement not made lightly. Dominique is the ninth generation family member to be involved in wine making, yet the first to have his own label bearing the Portet family name. Son of Andre Portet of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild in Pauillac, his training began at one of the worlds most illustrious wineries. He was qualified at the Montpellier University and spent one year as a purchasing officer in the French Legion. He then moved on and spent seasons in the Medoc, the Rhone Valley, Provence and with Champagne giant Moet et Chandon. Dominique then joined his brother in the Napa Valley where he spent three years and continually searched to source vineyards to rival those from the Bordeaux region. In 1976, he pioneered the renaissance of the Victorian Wine Industry. In 2000 Dominique initiated his own label, looking for a suitable winery site, he settled on the Yarra Valley region. he was attracted to the quality, beauty, charm & style of the valley and found structure that reminded him of bordeaux. The tradition associated with the Portet family continues today with wife Julia and sons Ben, Thomas and Henri. Ben a tenth generation winemaker, wth experience in South Africa (Stellenbosch), France and America (Napa Valley) has returned to his family in the Yarra Valley to continue the Portet legacy. Thomas lives in Denmark and keeps an eye on the family export business. This is a beautiful unique winery that has a commitment to high quality winemaking of exceptional standards. Domaine ChandonThis is an amazing vineyard of understated sophistication and uninterrupted panoramic views that focuses on world class wines, fresh produce and simplicity. Since the 1960's, Moet & Chandon began exploring the potential for producing world class sparkling wines outside of France. Already established in Argentina, Brazil and California, an Estate in Australia was an opportunity not to be missed. During the 80's, a group of Australian wine experts were contracted to find an ideal site for the cool climate Champagne grapes. Nestled in the Yarra Valley they found an old dairy farm named Green point that had ideal soil and climate conditions. Since 1986 this has been the site of Domaine Chandon. By the early 1990's Chandon winemaking team had started producing small quantities of still wines using grapes sourced from local vineyards which were already supplying the fruit for Chandon Sparkling Wines. The recently refurbished & revitalised Chandon Greenpoint Brasserie is the Yarra Valley's leading food and wine destination. The Greenpoint Brasserie's focus is on fresh local produce prepared with simplicity and served in an atmosphere that is sure to indulge the senses.
